Understanding Tempranillo

Named for its early ripening cycle — temprano meaning "early" in Spanish — Tempranillo is a grape of remarkable adaptability. Planted across Spain's great wine regions, it takes on a distinct character depending on altitude, soil composition and winemaking approach. In cooler, high-altitude sites it produces wines with vivid acidity, grippy tannins and an almost Burgundian restraint; in warmer, lower-lying vineyards the same variety delivers richer, more opulent fruit with a broader, velvety mouthfeel. Aromatically, Tempranillo is a study in layered complexity. Expect ripe cherry, dried plum, tobacco leaf, leather and subtle earthy notes — qualities that evolve beautifully with oak ageing into deeper registers of cedar, dark chocolate and dried herbs. The finish is typically long and structured, making it one of the most cellar-worthy red varieties on the market.

Highlights from Our Cellar

Among the standout bottles in this selection, the Alión Tinto 2022 from Bodegas Vega Sicilia and Bod. Alión is essential tasting for any serious Tempranillo enthusiast. Terroir-driven and full-bodied, it displays the mineral precision and architectural tannins that have made this producer a benchmark for the variety. It rewards cellaring but already shows remarkable poise and depth in its youth. For those drawn to the contemplative side of aged Spanish reds, the Peñafalcón Vendimia Seleccionada 2003 is a revelation — a Tempranillo with over two decades of bottle development, its fruit now beautifully integrated with tertiary notes of dried flowers, forest floor and tobacco. Drinking it is, quite simply, a lesson in what this grape can become. If you prefer a more artisan expression, Casajús NIC brings a different dimension to the conversation: concentrated, mineral and shaped by old vines, it reflects the hand of a dedicated small producer with an uncompromising vision.

Food Pairing

Tempranillo's structural balance — moderate acidity, firm but polished tannins and generous fruit — makes it one of the most food-friendly red varieties available. Classic pairings include slow-roasted lamb, Iberian charcuterie, aged Manchego, wild game stews and wood-fired beef. Younger, lighter expressions pair beautifully with grilled vegetables, mushroom dishes and charcuterie boards, while the more age-worthy bottles call for the full theatre of a long Sunday roast. Browse our full Tempranillo collection above and order with confidence — each bottle is selected for quality, authenticity and the kind of character that makes Spanish wine so compelling.
