Peñafalcón Siglo XI VS 2006 is a structured, age-worthy red wine from the prestigious Ribera del Duero appellation, crafted by Bodegas Peñafalcón — a family estate whose roots stretch back to the 17th century in the historic town of Peñafiel. The Siglo XI range represents the pinnacle of the winery's production, with the VS (Vendimia Seleccionada) expression drawing from carefully selected plots of organically farmed Tinto Fino — the local name for Tempranillo — grown on limestone and stony soils at elevations exceeding 700 metres above sea level.

The estate's commitment to sustainable viticulture is total: no herbicides, hand-worked rows, and natural fertilisation with sheep manure. Winemaking blends modern temperature control with traditional manual punch-downs, preserving the grape's natural character while adding complexity. The extended barrel ageing synonymous with the Siglo XI line has allowed this 2006 vintage to develop an extraordinary depth and seamless integration of fruit, oak, and terroir-driven minerality.

In the glass, this premium Spanish red wine reveals a deep ruby-garnet hue with warm brick edges — a visual marker of graceful evolution. The bouquet is remarkably expressive: ripe dark plum, blackberry and dried fruit are layered with cigar box, earthy truffle, balsamic herbs and a whisper of liquorice and Oriental spice. On the palate, the mouthfeel is plush and rounded, with the tannins having softened beautifully over nearly two decades into something velvety and refined. A lively underlying acidity keeps the wine fresh and food-friendly, while the finish lingers with mineral nuance and warming spice.

Perfect pairing for slow-roasted lamb, aged Manchego, game dishes, or a classic Iberian charcuterie board. If you're looking to buy Peñafalcón Siglo XI online, Mercado 46 offers European delivery of this exceptional old-vintage Ribera del Duero red — a wine that tells the story of a family, a land, and more than a thousand years of winemaking heritage.

The Winery

Founded in 2000

Bodegas Peñafalcón is an independent family winery located in Peñafiel, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin. Officially founded in 2000 by Casimiro and his wife María José Arranz, the winery draws on a generational legacy stretching back to the 17th century, when their ancestors were already crafting wine in traditional stone cellars in the region. The name Peñafalcón itself is a journey into the medieval past: historical records show that the village bore this name in the 11th century before becoming known as Peñafiel. The toponym, meaning «rock with a falcon perched at its summit», perfectly encapsulates the spirit of a winery deeply proud of its land and heritage. Peñafalcón's winemaking philosophy is rooted in a profound respect for the land and for traditional cultivation methods. From its very beginnings, the winery has embraced organic viticulture: rows are worked by hand, herbicides are entirely avoided, and sheep manure is used as a natural fertilizer. This unwavering commitment to the environment yields exceptional-quality grapes from privileged vineyard plots such as Santa Cruz, Carraovejas and Blanqueras, where Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are cultivated. Among its most acclaimed wines is the Peñafalcón Siglo XI range, which includes the Crianza aged 24 months in barrel, the Reserva aged 36 months, and the exclusive Gran Reserva with up to five years of ageing. These wines express the unique personality of the Ribera del Duero terroir and the artisanal passion with which Casimiro and his family carry on a centuries-old tradition. International recognition speaks to the quality of their wines: Bodegas Peñafalcón has accumulated more than 56 Super Gold and Gold awards in national and international competitions, including the Gran Oro Internacional, the Catavinum World Wine Spirits Competition and the International Wine Guide. Over 70% of production is exported to markets across Europe, Asia and the United States.
