Nose

Ripe cherry liqueur and blackcurrant lead a bouquet of refined complexity, underscored by a precise graphite-like minerality. Secondary notes of clove, cinnamon and fresh mint emerge alongside subtly integrated new oak.

Palate

Full-bodied and generous on the palate with a flowing, elegant entry. Concentrated mid-palate fruit — ripe dark cherry and cassis — is framed by polished, noble tannins and a crisp, high-altitude acidity that lends freshness and structural precision.

Finish

Long, persistent and deeply satisfying finish, with lingering impressions of very ripe fruit, gentle spice and a mineral thread that extends the wine's presence well beyond the swallow.

Pago de Capellanes El Nogal Special Red 2021 stands as one of the most compelling single-vineyard expressions to emerge from Ribera del Duero in recent years. Crafted by Bodegas Pago de los Capellanes — one of the region's most acclaimed family estates, recognised among the world's top 100 wineries by Wine & Spirits — this is 100% Tinta Fina (Tempranillo) sourced from a carefully selected plot within the family's 125-hectare estate in Pedrosa de Duero, at over 800 metres above sea level.

The wine spent 22 months ageing in new French oak barrels of selected grain, passing through four distinct types of oak — a meticulous process that adds textural depth while preserving the wine's varietal purity. The result earned 94 points from the prestigious Guía Peñín for the 2021 vintage, confirming El Nogal's standing as a benchmark terroir-driven red from this celebrated denomination.

On the nose, the bouquet is refined and complex: ripe cherry liqueur, blackcurrant and cassis frame a core of minerality — graphite-like and precise — with secondary notes of clove, cinnamon, fresh mint and subtly integrated oak. The mouthfeel is generous and full-bodied, with a flowing, elegant entry giving way to concentrated mid-palate fruit. The tannins are polished and noble, reflecting the maturity of the harvest, while natural acidity from the high-altitude vineyard lends structure and freshness. The finish is long, persistent and rewarding, with layers of ripe fruit and fine spice that linger gracefully.

For those looking to buy Pago de Capellanes El Nogal online, this is an age-worthy Ribera del Duero red that rewards patience in the cellar or benefits greatly from at least an hour of decanting before serving. A natural companion to roasted red meats, game, aged sheep's cheese and slow-braised Iberian pork dishes. One of the finest single-vineyard Tempranillo wines available to buy online today.

The Winery

Founded in 1996

Pago de los Capellanes is a family winery founded in 1996 by Paco Rodero and Concha Villa, located in Pedrosa de Duero in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen. Its name recalls a history dating back to the 14th century, when the chaplains of the Church of Santa María del Campo received these lands as payment for their religious services, connecting the winery to an extraordinarily deep cultural and agricultural legacy. The winemaking philosophy at Pago de los Capellanes is rooted in the utmost respect for the land and tradition, with artisanal and personalised care given to each individual plot. Production is deliberately kept below the levels permitted by the Ribera del Duero Regulatory Council, ensuring exceptional quality in every vintage. The winery works exclusively with the Tinto Fino variety — Tempranillo — and produces between 800,000 and 950,000 bottles per year. Among its most celebrated wines is the Crianza, a blend from 18 different plots aged for 12 months in new oak barrels, named one of the 100 best wines in the world by the prestigious Wine & Spirits magazine, which also ranked the winery among the 100 best wineries in the world. The Parcela El Nogal, sourced from six hectares of sandy-loam soils, delivers an opulent and enveloping style, while Parcela El Picón is regarded as the estate's wine with the greatest bottle-ageing potential. Additionally, their wine «Un Sueño en las Alturas 2020» was awarded best red wine of the year at the Premios Alimentos de España. In 2014, the family expanded their winemaking project with the launch of the O Luar do Sil brand in the Valdeorras Denominación de Origen, specialising in white wines made from Godello, with their own winery in Larouco operational since 2016.
