Oremus Aszú 5 Puttonyos 2019 is one of the world's most iconic sweet wines, produced by Oremus Tokaji in the UNESCO-listed Tokaj-Hegyalja region of northeastern Hungary — a winery now guided by the Álvarez family of Vega Sicilia fame. This is a wine with centuries of royal pedigree, famously described by Louis XIV as the «wine of kings, the king of wines».

The 2019 vintage is crafted from hand-harvested Furmint, Zéta, and Sárgamuskotály grapes, each berry individually selected for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) infection across multiple passes through the vineyard. The «5 Puttonyos» designation signals a richly concentrated aszú paste — at least 120 grams per litre of residual sugar — fermented and aged in Hungarian oak casks within the centuries-old underground cellars of Tolcsva, where the unique microclimate of volcanic soils and the endemic Cladosporium cellare mould shape the wine's singular personality.

On the nose, this stunning Tokaji sweet wine opens with lush aromas of candied apricot, waxed lemon, honeyed pineapple and wildflower honey, layered with notes of vanilla and caramel that speak to careful oak maturation. The mouthfeel is sumptuously silky yet structured, with a bright, mouth-cleansing acidity that beautifully counterbalances the wine's sweetness — revealing waves of tangerine, mango, quince and toffee across the mid-palate. The finish is exceptionally long and lingering, with echoes of toasted hazelnut, oriental spice and dried citrus peel that confirm its age-worthy character.

The Winery

Founded in 1993

Oremus Tokaji is one of the most iconic wineries in the Tokaj region of northeastern Hungary, nestled amid the Zemplén Mountains near the Ukrainian border. While wine production at the Oremus vineyard dates back to 1620, and a medieval document from June 16, 1462 constitutes the earliest written reference to its vineyards, the winery in its current form was established in 1993 when the Álvarez family — owners of the legendary Vega Sicilia estate in Spain — acquired these lands and embarked on an ambitious project of restoration and modernization. The name «Oremus» derives from Latin, meaning «let us pray», reflecting the spiritual reverence that has historically surrounded these extraordinary wines. The Álvarez family has masterfully balanced the centuries-old tradition of one of the world's most revered wines with technological advancement. Their thorough study of local production methods and deep respect for tradition are evident in the construction of the new winery and in every stage of the winemaking process. The stated goal at Oremus is to produce Tokaji wines of elegance and balance, always seeking a perfect harmony between sweet fruit and the natural acidity that defines this appellation. The estate encompasses 33 hectares of vineyard planted predominantly with Furmint, the flagship variety of Tokaj, alongside Hárslevelü, Sárga Muskotály, Zéta, Kövérszolo, and Gohér. The winemaking process follows the traditional formula of the region: the botrytised Aszú and Eszencia wines undergo slow fermentation and years of ageing in small barrels within the ancient underground cellars of the estate. The range includes Aszú wines from three to six puttonyos, Eszencia, Late Harvest, and single-vineyard dry whites such as Mandolás and Petrács. The Tokaj Hegyalja region was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, and as early as 1772, in the world's first vineyard classification, Oremus was ranked PRIMAE CLASSIS. Its wines enjoy broad international critical acclaim and consistently high scores in specialist publications.
