Viyuela Barrica 4 Months 2022 is a 100% Tempranillo red wine from the prestigious Ribera del Duero appellation, crafted by Bodegas Viyuela from hand-harvested grapes grown in 30-year-old vineyards in Boada de Roa. Part of the winery's Classic range, it offers an approachable yet genuinely expressive introduction to a family estate with over two centuries of winemaking heritage in the region.

The winemaking approach is meticulous from the very start. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with careful selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table. The wine then spends four months aging in French oak barrels, with malolactic fermentation completed inside the barrel itself — a technique that naturally softens the tannin structure and adds a seductive, creamy mouthfeel to the finished wine.

In the glass, this Ribera del Duero red displays a deep ruby colour with vivid blue-violet hues. The bouquet is open and inviting, with generous notes of wild dark berries — blackcurrant, blueberry, blackberry — followed by subtle spice from the French oak. On the palate, it is fresh and fleshy, with ripe, well-knit tannins, lively acidity and a silky, smooth finish that lingers with clean, fruit-forward persistence. At 13.5% ABV, it is elegant rather than heavy, structured rather than austere.

Bodegas Viyuela was recognised as the best winery in Ribera del Duero by Mundus Vini in 2019, and continues to receive acclaim from international publications including Decanter and Wine Advocate — testament to the quality ethos behind every bottle. Whether you're looking to buy Ribera del Duero Tempranillo online or simply explore one of Spain's most celebrated wine regions, the Viyuela Barrica 4 Months 2022 is a compelling, food-friendly choice. Pair it with grilled lamb, Iberian charcuterie, braised short rib or aged Manchego. Available now with European delivery through Mercado 46.

The Winery

Founded in 2003

Bodegas Viyuela is a family winery located in Boada de Roa, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen. Although the family has been cultivating vineyards since the early 19th century, it was in 2003 that José Ángel González Viyuela took the decisive step of building a modern winery to fully express the potential of his terroir and viticultural heritage. Today, the general management is led by his daughter, Laura González Sainz, reinforcing the family and generational character of the project. The winery works exclusively with the Tempranillo variety, grown across 23 hectares of estate vineyards and an additional 10 hectares under controlled management. All harvesting is done by hand, with rigorous grape selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar, ensuring the highest quality raw material. The winemaking approach is guided by vine age: the oldest parcels yield wines destined for longer ageing and greater complexity, while younger vines produce fresher, more approachable expressions. All wines spend time in Bordeaux-style oak barrels for varying periods, adding structure and elegance. Annual production stands at around 150,000 bottles, divided into two clearly defined ranges: the Classic line — comprising Viyuela Barrica, Viyuela Crianza and Viyuela Reserva — and the Signature line, with more prestigious references such as Viyuela 3+3, Viyuela 10 and Viyuela Xº Aniversario. International recognition has consistently validated the winery's trajectory: outstanding scores from critics including James Suckling, Tim Atkin and Decanter, and in 2019 Mundus Vini named it the best winery in Ribera del Duero. The Gran Reserva 2016 earned a Grand Gold at that same competition, alongside the Best of Show award in the Gran Reserva category for the appellation.
