Trus Pico de Luyas is the pinnacle of Bodegas Trus — a single-parcel Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) sourced from highly calcareous soils in the Ribera del Duero appellation, grown at approximately 800 metres above sea level. Rated 95 points by Peñín and 93 by both Tim Atkin and James Suckling for the 2019 vintage, Pico de Luyas stands among the most compelling premium red wines from this benchmark Spanish region.

Founded in 1999 with a clear château philosophy, Bodegas Trus manages up to 14 individual vineyard plots, each vinified separately to capture the nuances of their calcareous and clay-limestone soils. The name TRUS is an acronym of Tierra (Soil), Roble (Oak), Uva (Grape) and Sol (Sun) — the four pillars behind every wine crafted here. Pico de Luyas is aged a minimum of 12 months in French oak barriques, a choice that adds structure and complexity while respecting the terroir-driven character of the fruit.

The nose is a bold, layered bouquet of ripe blackberries, dark cherries and plum, lifted by notes of liquorice, dark chocolate and subtle toasty oak — all underpinned by a stony, mineral undertone that speaks directly to those calcareous vineyard soils. On the palate, the wine delivers full-bodied, mouth-filling richness: grippy yet polished tannins with impressive mouthfeel, a bright, well-integrated acidity and a mid-palate generosity that makes 14.5% vol feel perfectly balanced. The finish is long, persistent and deeply satisfying.

A wine of this weight and structure is built for the table: roasted lamb, aged beef, slow-cooked game or mature sheep's-milk cheeses are natural partners. Its depth also makes Pico de Luyas an age-worthy bottle worth cellaring for five to ten years from vintage.
