Nose
Fresh cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange with warm clove and cinnamon spice; a compelling volcanic minerality of graphite, iron and damp stone with a subtle floral lift.
Palate
Silky mouthfeel with seamlessly integrated, fine-grained tannins; vivid, salivating acidity frames a mid-palate of ripe red berry concentration with hints of Mediterranean herbs and volcanic earth.
Finish
Impressively long and lingering, with a signature floral note of liquid lavender and persistent mineral smokiness that speaks eloquently of the Etna terroir.
Tenuta Etna Red Wine 2023 is a compelling expression of Etna Rosso DOC from Tenuta delle Terre Nere, the estate founded by visionary producer Marco de Grazia on the north-facing slopes of Mount Etna. De Grazia famously declared Etna the 'Burgundy of the Mediterranean' — and with wines like this, it is easy to understand why.
Crafted from old-vine Nerello Mascalese — some plots exceeding a century in age — the grapes are grown at between 600 and 1,000 metres above sea level on volcanic basaltic soils rich in lava, ash and mineral sands. The estate has been farmed organically since its very first vintage in 2002, with short pruning and meticulous canopy management inspired by Burgundian viticulture. In the cellar, spontaneous malolactic fermentation and extended ageing in large French oak barrels lend the wine its characteristic roundness, while preserving the terroir-driven transparency that defines the Terre Nere style.
On the nose, this Etna Rosso opens with delicate red fruits — fresh cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange — layered over warm spice notes of clove and cinnamon and a signature volcanic minerality: think graphite, iron and damp stone. The palate is silky and refined, with seamlessly integrated tannins, vivid acidity and a mid-palate concentration of ripe red berry fruits that speaks of true volcanic terroir. The finish is impressively long, with a lingering floral note of liquid lavender that elevates this wine well above its peers.
This is a structured yet food-friendly red that pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, slow-braised lamb, aged cheeses, wild mushroom risotto or hearty pasta dishes. Its age-worthy profile also rewards cellaring for 5 to 10 years.

The Winery
Founded in 2002
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is a benchmark winery on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, founded in 2002 by Marco de Grazia following the acquisition of a 45-hectare estate. Although his first investments in Etna's volcanic soils date back to the late 1990s, it was in 2004 that the winery achieved full self-sufficiency, vinifying the estate's grapes in its own cellar for the first time. Marco de Grazia, who had previously played a pivotal role in Barolo's rise to international fame, brought his pioneering vision to Sicily, becoming one of the first producers to recognise the potential of these long-forgotten terroirs and to place Etna on the map of the world's finest wines. The winery's philosophy revolves around viticultural excellence: in Etna's extreme climate, meticulous attention to the vineyard is the key to achieving optimal and consistent ripening. Viticulture is fully organic—certified since 2010—using only Bordeaux mixture and organic fertilisation. In the cellar, the approach is classic and Burgundian in style: maceration-fermentation lasting 10 to 15 days, malolactic fermentation, and ageing in oak with 25% new barrels, with bottling around 18 months after harvest. Marco de Grazia himself defined Etna as the «Burgundy of the Mediterranean» and adopted the Burgundy-shaped bottle as a mark of identity. Tenuta delle Terre Nere produces around 70 micro-vinifications of Nerello Mascalese and 25 of Carricante, sourced from nine Contrade—the individual crus of the Etna DOC—including Calderara Sottana, San Lorenzo, Santo Spirito, Feudo di Mezzo and Guardiola. Its most iconic cuvée, Etna Rosso «Prephylloxera – La Vigna di Don Peppino», is produced from century-old vines over 140 years old trained in traditional espalier. Today, its 15 wines are exported to 95 countries, with the United States as the primary market, cementing the winery's status as an international reference point for the Etna DOC appellation.
