Nose
Varietal and pure on the bouquet: ripe citrus, fresh pineapple and a gentle spice note underscored by a stony, wet-schist minerality that speaks directly to the estate's blue-schist terroir.
Palate
Medium-to-full bodied with a dense yet focused mouthfeel. Clean, precise acidity keeps the mid-palate taut and energetic, delivering excellent balance between richness and freshness.
Finish
Long, saline and highly aromatic finish with lingering persistence — a hallmark of fine Alsace Riesling grown on schist soils. Refreshing and structured to the very end.
The Schieferkopf Riesling Via Saint Jacques 2019 is a white wine from AOC Alsace, crafted by Domaine Schieferkopf — Michel Chapoutier's ambitious Alsatian project. Chapoutier, celebrated for his record-breaking Parker scores in the Rhône Valley, turned his gaze northeast to the village of Bernardvillé, where he identified the only blue-schist subsoil in all of Alsace. The estate's name echoes the ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela that once wound through these very vineyards, lending both history and soul to every bottle.
The vineyard itself is shallow-rooted, southeast-facing, and swept by a characteristic local breeze — conditions that naturally limit yields and concentrate the grape's aromatic intensity. Cultivated using organic and biodynamic principles, this is terroir-driven winemaking in its most committed form. The 2019 vintage delivered excellent ripeness across Alsace, with warm sunny days and cool nights preserving the Riesling's signature crisp acidity and aromatic lift.
On the nose, the wine opens with impressive purity: ripe citrus, fresh pineapple and a whisper of spice give way to a stony, wet-schist minerality that speaks directly of its rare geological origin. On the palate, the mouthfeel is dense yet focused, carried by clean, precise acidity that keeps the mid-palate taut and refreshing. The finish is long and saline, with a lingering aromatic persistence that marks out the great Rieslings of Alsace. At 13% vol, it strikes a fine balance between richness and tension — expressive now, yet age-worthy for at least four to five more years in the cellar.
An outstanding food-friendly wine: pair it with roasted fish, shellfish platters, washed-rind soft cheeses or citrus-inflected vegetable risottos. If you are looking to buy Schieferkopf Riesling online or explore the best white wines from Alsace, this Via Saint Jacques 2019 is a compelling, benchmark expression of the varietal. The Winery
Founded in 2009
Domaine Schieferkopf was established in 2009 when Michel Chapoutier, the celebrated vigneron from the Rhône Valley, set his sights on Alsace with the ambition of crafting great rieslings. Together with four like-minded friends, he acquired 8 hectares of vineyards in the commune of Bernardvillé, planted on the only seam of blue schist in the entire Alsace region. The first bottles did not reach the market until 2011, marking the official debut of the domaine's wines. The name Schieferkopf, meaning 'slate roof', speaks directly to the exceptional terroir that defines these wines. The blue schist soils, complemented by touches of sandstone, are cultivated on steep and demanding hillsides, imparting a distinctive mineral character and refined elegance to every wine produced. The estate works exclusively under organic farming, fully aligned with the philosophy of Maison M. Chapoutier, a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture and a steadfast advocate for expressing the full potential of each terroir. The domaine's range is anchored by Riesling, with five wines including three single-vineyard parcel selections. Its most emblematic cuvées include the Riesling Lieu-dit Berg, Pinot Gris Schieferkopf, and Gewurztraminer, all distinguished by their freshness, elegance, and terroir-driven character. Beyond Alsace, the domaine also produces wines from exceptional vineyard sites in the German regions of Baden, Franken, and Pfalz. Domaine Schieferkopf is part of the M. Chapoutier group, a family-owned maison with roots in the Rhône Valley dating back to 1808 and holder of a world record for 100/100 scores awarded by critic Robert Parker. Its recognition as a new entry in the Bettane et Desseauve Guide further confirms the international standing of this outstanding Alsatian project.
