Nose
Intense and expressive bouquet of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, with violet florals and the Tempranillo hallmark of black liquorice. Subtle French oak notes of vanilla, coconut and clove add complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
Palate
Full-bodied and creamy on the palate, with fine, lively tannins that deliver structure and depth while remaining immediately approachable. Crisp, well-integrated acidity keeps the mid-palate fresh and vibrant, enhancing the wine's balsamic character.
Finish
Long, elegant and persistently balsamic finish with lingering notes of dark fruit, sweet spice and a refined mineral undertone. A benchmark finish for age-worthy Ribera del Duero.
Pago de Capellanes Red Crianza 2021 stands as one of the most compelling expressions of 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, crafted by the Rodero-Villa family at their estate in Pedrosa de Duero. The winery, consistently ranked among Spain's finest and recognised by Wine & Spirits as one of the world's top 100 producers, has built its reputation on a philosophy of terroir-driven winemaking — 125 hectares of estate vineyards divided into 35 individual plots, farmed with precision viticulture on clay, gravel and sandy soils at elevations exceeding 800 metres above sea level.
The 2021 vintage was aged for 12 months in 300-litre French oak barrels, a choice that brings refinement and integration rather than dominance of oak. The result earned 93 points from the prestigious Guía Peñín, confirming the consistent quality that has made this Crianza a benchmark for the denomination.
On the nose, the bouquet is expressive and layered: ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum lead the way, complemented by violet florals and the variety's signature black liquorice note. French oak contributes subtle nuances of vanilla, clove and coconut without overshadowing the fruit. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet fresh, with a creamy mouthfeel and fine, lively tannins that provide structure while remaining approachable now. Vibrant acidity keeps the mid-palate energetic and balanced, leading into a long, balsamic and elegantly persistent finish.
Decanting for one hour is recommended before serving at 16–18°C. This is a quintessentially food-friendly red wine, pairing beautifully with grilled red meats, roast lamb, aged cheeses and game. The 5-litre format makes it an outstanding choice for entertaining or for those who want to keep a great Ribera del Duero red always within reach. The Winery
Founded in 1996
Pago de los Capellanes is a family winery founded in 1996 by Paco Rodero and Concha Villa, located in Pedrosa de Duero in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen. Its name recalls a history dating back to the 14th century, when the chaplains of the Church of Santa María del Campo received these lands as payment for their religious services, connecting the winery to an extraordinarily deep cultural and agricultural legacy. The winemaking philosophy at Pago de los Capellanes is rooted in the utmost respect for the land and tradition, with artisanal and personalised care given to each individual plot. Production is deliberately kept below the levels permitted by the Ribera del Duero Regulatory Council, ensuring exceptional quality in every vintage. The winery works exclusively with the Tinto Fino variety — Tempranillo — and produces between 800,000 and 950,000 bottles per year. Among its most celebrated wines is the Crianza, a blend from 18 different plots aged for 12 months in new oak barrels, named one of the 100 best wines in the world by the prestigious Wine & Spirits magazine, which also ranked the winery among the 100 best wineries in the world. The Parcela El Nogal, sourced from six hectares of sandy-loam soils, delivers an opulent and enveloping style, while Parcela El Picón is regarded as the estate's wine with the greatest bottle-ageing potential. Additionally, their wine «Un Sueño en las Alturas 2020» was awarded best red wine of the year at the Premios Alimentos de España. In 2014, the family expanded their winemaking project with the launch of the O Luar do Sil brand in the Valdeorras Denominación de Origen, specialising in white wines made from Godello, with their own winery in Larouco operational since 2016.
