Nose
A complex and alluring bouquet of ripe cassis, dark cherry and mora, interwoven with oriental spices — clove, cinnamon — a vivid hint of fresh mint, and subtle smoky, earthy and mineral undertones that reflect the unique terroir of the El Nogal vineyard.
Palate
Rich, fleshy and generously structured on the palate, with a surprisingly refreshing quality for a wine of this concentration. The mid-palate opens into waves of very ripe dark fruit and warming spice, supported by polished, noble tannins that provide structure without austerity.
Finish
Exceptionally long and persistent finish with lingering notes of very ripe fruit, warm spice and a noble, enveloping aftertaste that stays on the palate for minutes.
Pago de Capellanes El Nogal Special Red 2021, presented in a striking 1.5-litre Magnum format, is the purest expression of the El Nogal single vineyard within the Ribera del Duero appellation. Produced by Bodegas Pago de los Capellanes — one of Spain's most acclaimed estate wineries, founded in 1996 by the Rodero Villa family on land with a history stretching back to the 14th century — this limited-release red earned 94 points from the prestigious Guía Peñín, cementing its status as a benchmark for the region.
Crafted entirely from Tempranillo (locally known as Tinta del País), the wine originates from a precisely managed single plot where yields are kept to a remarkable 5,000 kg per hectare, well below the appellation's permitted ceiling. The estate's philosophy of precision viticulture across 35 individually managed plots ensures that each parcel's unique combination of clay, limestone and sandy soils is respected and coaxed to its full potential. Situated at over 800 metres above sea level, the vineyards benefit from the extreme continental climate of the Castilian plateau — scorching days and cool nights that generate the tension and aromatic concentration that define this wine.
The bouquet is immediately compelling: ripe cassis and dark cherry intertwine with black mora, while layers of oriental spice — clove, cinnamon — and a vivid whisper of fresh mint add complexity and lift. Subtle smoky and earthy undertones speak eloquently of the terroir. On the palate, the mouthfeel is rich and generous yet surprisingly fresh, with a mid-palate that unfolds into waves of concentrated dark fruit and warming spice. The tannins are polished and noble, providing a structured backbone without any harshness. The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, with lingering notes of very ripe fruit and spice that linger for minutes.
The Magnum format is no mere aesthetic choice: the larger bottle slows oxidative ageing, preserving freshness and amplifying the wine's age-worthiness — making it a compelling buy El Nogal online for collectors and enthusiasts alike seeking the best Ribera del Duero red wine in a prestige format.

The Winery
Founded in 1996
Pago de los Capellanes is a family winery founded in 1996 by Paco Rodero and Concha Villa, located in Pedrosa de Duero in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen. Its name recalls a history dating back to the 14th century, when the chaplains of the Church of Santa María del Campo received these lands as payment for their religious services, connecting the winery to an extraordinarily deep cultural and agricultural legacy. The winemaking philosophy at Pago de los Capellanes is rooted in the utmost respect for the land and tradition, with artisanal and personalised care given to each individual plot. Production is deliberately kept below the levels permitted by the Ribera del Duero Regulatory Council, ensuring exceptional quality in every vintage. The winery works exclusively with the Tinto Fino variety — Tempranillo — and produces between 800,000 and 950,000 bottles per year. Among its most celebrated wines is the Crianza, a blend from 18 different plots aged for 12 months in new oak barrels, named one of the 100 best wines in the world by the prestigious Wine & Spirits magazine, which also ranked the winery among the 100 best wineries in the world. The Parcela El Nogal, sourced from six hectares of sandy-loam soils, delivers an opulent and enveloping style, while Parcela El Picón is regarded as the estate's wine with the greatest bottle-ageing potential. Additionally, their wine «Un Sueño en las Alturas 2020» was awarded best red wine of the year at the Premios Alimentos de España. In 2014, the family expanded their winemaking project with the launch of the O Luar do Sil brand in the Valdeorras Denominación de Origen, specialising in white wines made from Godello, with their own winery in Larouco operational since 2016.
