Pago de Capellanes Doroteo Tinto Especial 2021 stands as the flagship expression of Bodegas Pago de los Capellanes, a family-owned estate in the heart of Ribera del Duero that Wine & Spirits magazine has listed among the world's top 100 wineries. Crafted entirely from Tinto Fino — the local name for Tempranillo — this single-estate red represents the pinnacle of what this high-altitude Spanish denomination can achieve: concentration, terroir-driven complexity, and genuine age-worthiness.
The Doroteo is sourced from the most exceptional plots within the estate's 125 hectares of trellis-trained vines, divided into 35 individual micro-parcels and farmed with precision according to each parcel's soil composition. Following harvest, the wine undergoes an extended élevage of 36 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, followed by a further 24 months of bottle ageing before release — a commitment to maturation that speaks volumes about the estate's philosophy.
In the glass, the 2021 vintage opens with a deep, inky ruby-garnet hue and a violet-tinged rim that signals both concentration and vitality. The bouquet is immediately captivating: ripe blackberry, damson plum, and cassis lead the way, supported by notes of liquorice, warm spice, and subtle balsamic undertones. The oak influence is impeccably integrated, adding layers of cocoa, light tobacco, and a fine mineral thread that reflects the estate's calcareous-clay soils. On the palate, the mouthfeel is broad and sumptuously textured, with structured yet velvety tannins that promise a long evolution in the cellar. The mid-palate is rich with dark fruit, while a lively, well-calibrated acidity provides freshness and definition. The finish is exceptionally long, leaving lingering impressions of dark chocolate, clove, and a mineral salinity that is the hallmark of great Ribera del Duero.
A natural match for grilled prime cuts, slow-roasted lamb, aged Manchego, and hearty game dishes. Buy Pago de Capellanes Doroteo online through Mercado 46 and enjoy European delivery of one of Spain's most celebrated premium reds.

The Winery
Founded in 1996
Pago de los Capellanes is a family winery founded in 1996 by Paco Rodero and Concha Villa, located in Pedrosa de Duero in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen. Its name recalls a history dating back to the 14th century, when the chaplains of the Church of Santa María del Campo received these lands as payment for their religious services, connecting the winery to an extraordinarily deep cultural and agricultural legacy. The winemaking philosophy at Pago de los Capellanes is rooted in the utmost respect for the land and tradition, with artisanal and personalised care given to each individual plot. Production is deliberately kept below the levels permitted by the Ribera del Duero Regulatory Council, ensuring exceptional quality in every vintage. The winery works exclusively with the Tinto Fino variety — Tempranillo — and produces between 800,000 and 950,000 bottles per year. Among its most celebrated wines is the Crianza, a blend from 18 different plots aged for 12 months in new oak barrels, named one of the 100 best wines in the world by the prestigious Wine & Spirits magazine, which also ranked the winery among the 100 best wineries in the world. The Parcela El Nogal, sourced from six hectares of sandy-loam soils, delivers an opulent and enveloping style, while Parcela El Picón is regarded as the estate's wine with the greatest bottle-ageing potential. Additionally, their wine «Un Sueño en las Alturas 2020» was awarded best red wine of the year at the Premios Alimentos de España. In 2014, the family expanded their winemaking project with the launch of the O Luar do Sil brand in the Valdeorras Denominación de Origen, specialising in white wines made from Godello, with their own winery in Larouco operational since 2016.
