Pago Capellanes Picón Tinto Especial 2021 is a compelling single-vineyard expression of Tempranillo bottled in an impressive 1.5L magnum format by Bodegas Pago de los Capellanes, one of the most acclaimed estates in Ribera del Duero. Founded in 1996 by the Rodero-Villa family in the village of Pedrosa de Duero, the winery manages over 125 hectares of estate vineyards divided into 35 individual parcels, each vinified separately. El Picón — also marketed as Parcela El Picón or Finca El Picón — represents the pinnacle of their range: a limited-production wine crafted only in outstanding vintages from their most carefully selected low-yield plots.

The 2021 vintage delivers the structured, terroir-driven character that has earned this label consistent 94-point scores from major critics. The nose opens with expressive notes of blackberry, ripe plum and violets, layered with earthy undertones of wild herbs and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet refined, with a silky mouthfeel, well-integrated grippy tannins and a crisp backbone of acidity that lends remarkable freshness to its concentrated fruit. The finish is long and persistent, with a mineral quality that speaks to the high-altitude vineyards — planted between 700 and 1,100 metres above sea level — where extreme day-to-night temperature swings slow ripening and build complexity.

At 14.5% vol, the wine displays the bold, structured profile typical of the region's finest Tempranillo. The magnum format is ideal for age-worthy wines, slowing oxidation and allowing the wine to evolve gracefully over time. Decanting one to two hours before serving is strongly recommended to fully unlock its aromatic potential. A natural partner for roasted red meats, venison, lamb stew or aged hard cheeses. If you are looking to buy premium Spanish wine online, this Pago Capellanes Picón red wine in magnum is a standout choice — an age-worthy Ribera del Duero that rewards patience and impresses on every occasion.

The Winery

Founded in 1996

Pago de los Capellanes is a family winery founded in 1996 by Paco Rodero and Concha Villa, located in Pedrosa de Duero in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen. Its name recalls a history dating back to the 14th century, when the chaplains of the Church of Santa María del Campo received these lands as payment for their religious services, connecting the winery to an extraordinarily deep cultural and agricultural legacy. The winemaking philosophy at Pago de los Capellanes is rooted in the utmost respect for the land and tradition, with artisanal and personalised care given to each individual plot. Production is deliberately kept below the levels permitted by the Ribera del Duero Regulatory Council, ensuring exceptional quality in every vintage. The winery works exclusively with the Tinto Fino variety — Tempranillo — and produces between 800,000 and 950,000 bottles per year. Among its most celebrated wines is the Crianza, a blend from 18 different plots aged for 12 months in new oak barrels, named one of the 100 best wines in the world by the prestigious Wine & Spirits magazine, which also ranked the winery among the 100 best wineries in the world. The Parcela El Nogal, sourced from six hectares of sandy-loam soils, delivers an opulent and enveloping style, while Parcela El Picón is regarded as the estate's wine with the greatest bottle-ageing potential. Additionally, their wine «Un Sueño en las Alturas 2020» was awarded best red wine of the year at the Premios Alimentos de España. In 2014, the family expanded their winemaking project with the launch of the O Luar do Sil brand in the Valdeorras Denominación de Origen, specialising in white wines made from Godello, with their own winery in Larouco operational since 2016.
