Ossian is the flagship white wine of Ossian Vides y Vinos, a project that has spent nearly two decades proving that Verdejo — when sourced from pre-phylloxera vines and vinified with precision — can rival the world's finest age-worthy whites. The 2023 vintage draws on century-old vines grown at between 840 and 930 metres above sea level in Nieva, where wide diurnal temperature swings slow ripening and concentrate aromatic complexity in a way that lower-altitude sites simply cannot replicate.

The winemaking philosophy is rooted in minimal intervention and a deep respect for terroir. Hand-harvested grapes are cold-stabilised before gentle pressing, and the free-run must ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in a combination of 228-, 500- and 600-litre barrels and large foudres. The wine rests on its lees for approximately nine months — a process that builds the signature mouthfeel and textural density that sets Ossian apart from more commercial expressions of the variety. Viticulture is certified organic, in keeping with the estate's belief that these ancient sandy soils demand nothing less.

On the nose, the 2023 offers a captivating bouquet of ripe stone fruit — white peach, apricot — layered with dried herbs, wilted flowers and a compelling flint-like minerality that speaks directly to the arenaceous soils of Nieva. The palate is broad and glyceric, with a creamy, medium-weight mouthfeel that glides rather than grips, revealing hints of ripe tropical fruit and a delicate pastry note on the mid-palate. The finish is long, composed and refined, returning to the vibrant herbal freshness that defines authentic Verdejo at altitude.

Rated 94 points by Guía Peñín, Ossian 2023 is a wine to buy online and either enjoy now — with grilled sea bass, white asparagus, soft-ripened cheese or a delicate prawn bisque — or cellar with confidence for several years. For lovers of terroir-driven, oak-aged white wines from Spain, this is a benchmark expression of old-vine Verdejo that rewards patience and attention in equal measure.
