Nidia Guarda 2021 is the most ambitious white wine from Bodegas Nidia — a 100% Verdejo crafted with the same philosophy as the great white wines of the world. Born from old vines on the family estate La Cabaña in Olmedo, Valladolid, surrounded by the Adaja river, this terroir-driven bottling showcases just how compelling Verdejo can be when given time and patience. The gravelly, nutrient-poor soils and extreme continental climate produce grapes of remarkable concentration, keeping natural acidity crisp and well-defined even through extended aging.

The winemaking approach is deliberate and unhurried: nine months aging on its own fine lees, building texture, depth and aromatic complexity, followed by a further six months of bottle maturation before release. The result is a wine that rewards those who appreciate nuance over immediacy — structured, food-friendly and genuinely age-worthy.

On the nose, Nidia Guarda 2021 offers a high-intensity bouquet of ripe white fruit — baked pear and golden apple — lifted by bright citrus notes and delicate white blossom, underpinned by the garrigue and wild herb character that defines great Verdejo. On the palate, the lees aging speaks clearly: the mouthfeel is rich, round and glyceric, yet never heavy, with flavours of fennel, ripe orchard fruit and a subtle anise thread weaving through the mid-palate. The finish is long and beautifully balanced, closing with that characteristic Verdejo bitterness — a hallmark of the grape's identity and a mark of authenticity.

This is a wine to open alongside roasted white meats, creamy seafood risottos, semi-cured cheeses or complex fish dishes with rich sauces. It stands confidently apart from everyday Verdejo and signals what Bodegas Nidia does best: making wines of place, variety and genuine character.

The Winery

Founded in 2010

Bodegas Nidia is a small family-run project located on the La Cabaña estate in Medina del Campo (Valladolid), within the Rueda Denominación de Origen. The vineyard's history dates back to 1988, when the family committed to viticulture on this property. However, it was not until 2010 that young winemaker Daniel Torío began commercially producing wines under the Nidia label, driven by his belief in the exceptional potential of the family's vines. The La Cabaña terroir is a defining element: clay soils with the presence of rounded pebbles and high calcium content, situated close to the Adaja River at an altitude of over 770 metres. The continental climate, with significant diurnal temperature variations, combined with vineyards planted during the 1980s and 1990s and tended with meticulous care over the decades, provides the outstanding raw material that shapes every Nidia wine. The philosophy at Nidia is clear and uncompromising: to craft special, authentic, and 100% varietal wines. In the winery, tradition is combined with the latest technological advances, favouring slow fermentations of approximately 20 days at controlled temperatures between 14 °C and 15 °C, to preserve the full fruity character and varietal expression of each vintage. Among the most celebrated wines is Nidia de Guarda, a 100% Verdejo aged on its lees from vines over 30 years old, conceived to showcase the ageing potential of great white wines on a world stage. The range also includes a fresh Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, and reds from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2011 vintage firmly established Nidia as one of the finest and most consistent boutique Verdejo producers in Spain, with wines admired for their vibrant aromatic profile, offering orchard fruit and citrus notes intertwined with clean mineral character. A benchmark producer for lovers of Rueda Verdejo at its most expressive.
