The Winery
Founded in 1949
Vilarnau is a winery with deep roots in the Penedès region, whose history dates back to the 12th century, when the Vilarnau family settled in the area cultivating vineyards within the demarcation of the Castle of Subirats. However, it was in 1949 that the first Vilarnau-labelled cava was born, commercialising the sparkling wine produced at the estate known as «Can Petit i Les Planes de Vilarnau». In 1982, the winery joined the González Byass group, one of the leading names in the Spanish wine industry, and currently operates as an independent economic unit within the group. The estate covers 20 hectares of vineyards, where native varieties such as Macabeo and Xarel·lo predominate, complemented by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In October 2005, a state-of-the-art winery designed by architect Luis González was inaugurated at the heart of the estate. Environmental responsibility is a cornerstone of Vilarnau's identity: all its vineyards and wines are 100% organic, and the winery holds the Wineries for Climate Protection (WfCP) certification from the Spanish Wine Federation. Among its most celebrated wines, the Vilarnau Brut Reserva stands out, having been recognised as «Best Cava» and «Best Spanish Sparkling Wine» at The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships, as well as earning a gold medal at the Ecovino Awards organised by the University of La Rioja. The Vilarnau Rosé Delicat received the prestigious Premio Alimentos de España for Best Wine 2021, was named «Best Organic Cava» and «Best Rosé Cava» at the same international competition, and was selected as the official cava of the Laureus World Sports Awards 2025. The Albert de Vilarnau range offers gran reserva cavas with over 30 months of artisanal ageing, while Els Capricis de Vilarnau showcases Xarel·lo fermented in 250-litre chestnut barrels. All cavas are protected under the Cava Denomination of Origin.
